Woman arrested as she tried to talk about being gang raped by Gaddafi’s troops is 'returned her family'

Distraught: Iman Al-Obeidi, claimed she had been gang-raped by Gaddafi's troops and detained for two days
Libya - The Libyan government says a woman who stormed into a Tripoli hotel on Saturday to tell foreign reporters that government troops raped her is now with her family. As these dramatic images show, Iman al-Obeidi wept as she told how Gaddafi’s troops had held her at gunpoint at a checkpoint, tied her up, then led her away to be raped by 15 men over two days. She defied government minders to storm into a hotel in the heart of Tripoli to tell her ordeal to foreign journalists – and the television pictures have gone around the world. But the government now says four men were interrogated in the case, including the son of a high-ranking police officer. Government spokesman Moussa Ibrahim alleged that the woman was a prostitute who refused to accept medical examination, and that she is now with her sister in the Libyan capital. Iman al-Obeidi was tackled by waitresses and government minders as she told her story to journalists after rushing into the hotel where many are staying. She claimed loudly that troops had detained her at a checkpoint, tied her up, abused her, then led her away to be gang-raped. Her story could not be independently verified, but the dramatic scene provided a rare first-hand glimpse of the brutal crackdown on public dissent by Gaddafi's regime as the Libyan leader fights a rebellion against his rule that began last month.
